Life is a Highway

You guys. Have you ever known me to be speechless? I wouldn’t go quite that far, but I’m seriously close. Some of you may remember (smarties!) that I am currently in the scenic, rolling hills of New York attending the Animal Farm Foundation Language and Advocacy Internship! The trip has only just begun, and it is already vastly exceeding my lofty expectations. I’m seriously in my own version of heaven. My schedule is jam-packed with amazing dog-related seminars, lectures, and activities the next few days, and I promise I am collecting lots of information and photos to share with all of you! That is, if I ever decide to return (that is to be determined… if someone could deliver my dogs to me, there might not be any question! Oh, and that ol’ ball & chain of mine, too! I kid, I kid.) The scenery on my way here was so drop dead gorgeous that I almost teared up at the good fortune and serendipity that has led me to such an amazing opportunity. I am so blessed.

Ok sorry but this one upload took 10 minutes... so you'll have to wait in anticipation for the rest upon my return!

Ok sorry but this one upload took 10 minutes… so you’ll have to wait in anticipation for the rest upon my return!

(Please note, I risked my life on the side of back roads and blind turns to obtain these pictures for my loyal readers. You’re welcome.)

On my travels, I was able to stop in and visit some of the amazing women behind our rescue, LCPO (soon to undergo a name change). Those of you out there that are geography wizards might have picked up on the fact that we are located about 4 hours from the rescue with which we volunteer. The whole story behind that is one for another day, but because of that, I don’t often get to interact with the other leaders face-to-face as often as I’d like. I took this trip as an opportunity to do just that! Some of you may know that our rescue recently pulled a mom and 8 pups from a shelter in the south, and so I couldn’t resist stopping in to do some puppy snuggling!

I may not have time to squeeze in a post tomorrow, but please know that while I will of course have lots to share with you from this exciting trip, we also have a busy weekend jam packed with some fun dog adventures. We will be crossing some things off of our Summer Dog Bowl List! So next week will be full of fun posts and awesome pictures. Be sure to check in with us!

Siriusly Fashionable

Happy Friday, friends! We will keep it short and sweet today. I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed, but the collars you see on our dogs in most of the photos are in pretty sorry shape. We have been wanting to place an order with Sirius Republic since before we even started this blogging adventure! You may remember this post. Well, the time has finally come. We are ready to place our order!

Before we place the order, we wanted to check in with our readers. Do you have any input as to what collars we should order for the pups? We would like for them to coordinate between the three dogs, but not match. Also, we want the pattern choices to be indicative of each of the dog’s respective personality traits, and compatible with their coat collars and markings. By now, most of you probably know their personalities almost as well as we do. Do you think they are conveyed in our choices? Do you have better suggestions? Check out the Sirius Republic selection of patterns here!

Gaige’s Collar

DSC_0006

Gaige is the pup that is adorable, mischevious and spunky, and constantly getting into something. A daddy’s girl, she knows how to flit her lashes and wiggle her tail just right to squeak her way out of trouble. She loves to play rough but is also a cuddle bug. Also, Foster Dad has a thing for cherry emblems and vintage patterns.

Georgia’s Collar

Gia girl is the laid-back one of the group, never letting much get her worked up. She loves food and snuggles more than anything else in life, and is always up for some fun. She can be a bit stubborn, but only because she knows that she has us wrapped around her little white-tipped-tail.

Tonka’s Collar

DSC_0039
Tonka is our gentleman, a friend to all! His haters call him a teacher’s pet or a suck-up, but they’re just jealous that he has brains, brawns, and beauty. Obedience and loyalty are his greatest strengths, especially when his mama is a part of the equation. As a high school stereotype, Tonka would be the handsome jock that is friends with everyone, gets good grades, and helps your grandma across the street! We are having a little bit more trouble choosing his perfect pattern, so can you help us by voting?!

Take a look at their options and let us know if there is one that stands out to you as being perfect for the Tonkinator! We also love the gray sugar skulls, but are worried it might be too feminine for him. Also the Brewskies, and Bon Voyage… oh dear, we just can’t decide!

Do your dogs wear Sirius Republic collars? And if not, what in the world are you waiting for?! Sirius Republic has graciously offered a discount code to our loyal readers. If you are ready to take the plunge and make your dogs the most stylish ones on the block, head on over to their website and enter this code to enjoy 10% off: AFMF10. Thank you SR! You guys rock 🙂 ALSO, please don’t forget to enter the LCPO rescue code (RPLC97). This will send 20% of the sales their way, helping troubled pups like our sweet Georgia peach!

Enjoy the weekend, friends!

It’s a Numbers Game!

It is estimated that only ONE in every SIX-HUNDRED pit bulls finds a home. Animal control facilities in cities all across the US have pit bulls numbering 40 to 60% of the shelter population at any given time. It is estimated that 1 million dogs classified as a pit bull are euthanized each year (yes, this includes puppies!). The best (and sometimes only) chance a pit bull has at survival once admitted to an animal control facility, is by being pulled by a rescue. Rescues only exist with commitment from dedicated foster homes!

Our rescue partner is LCPO, or Luzerne County Pit Bull Owners.

In 2013, LCPO celebrated their SECOND birthday. In that short time, they have helped more than 150 dogs find their forever homes!

DSC_0090

In 2013 alone, SIX of the lucky LCPO dogs have already found their forever homes.

They have also pulled SEVEN precious pups from shelters in the new year. This brings the total current list of adoptable LCPO dogs to EIGHTEEN.

TWO of LCPO’s alumni have gone on to officially achieve their Canine Good Citizen Certification. Many more are in the works!

In 2012, LCPO took on some dogs with medical issues and/or special needs. Puppy Jora (who is still with the rescue!) required extensive mange treatment and other necessities, which totaled approximately $1,855. Next we have Miss Khloe, who is also still with the rescue. Her total is driven up by her high cost of boarding, spay surgery, and a few health issues, and has reached in excess of $1,215. Georgia was another needy lady (mainly due to the fact that her puppies also required care!) at $1,200. LCPO has also taken on SIX pit bulls who happened to hear only with their hearts! TWO of these deaf pitties are still available for adoption.

In 2012, at least 66 of the LCPO adopta-bulls found their forever homes! These are all dogs that would have been put to sleep in shelters without the help of a rescue.

The average cost for each incoming dog in 2012 was $450. The adoption fee remains at a mere $200.

While they focus first on finding forever homes for their adoptable dogs, LCPO reaches out to help dogs in many ways. LCPO offers the ‘NEPA Pit Fix Program’. This allows owners to have their pit bulls and pit mixes spayed or neutered for just $50. This cost covers the expense of the surgery, pain meds, and a rabies vaccination. There is no limit to the amount of dogs that can be altered under this program!

LCPO currently operates with a dedicated team of 3 Directors, 7 Leadership Members, and many volunteers. Volunteers have logged well over 250 hours of service in the new year.

Last year’s 5k Race to Rescue raised much-needed funds for LCPO. Rachael L. was the top fundraiser, contributing $650 with her individual fundraising efforts. The 2013 5k Race to Rescue will take place on June 8th. My goal is to raise $500, and my total currently stands at $395, with only 17 contributors. With every entry given the opportunity to win one of 11 prizes, those are some pretty good odds!

My favorite number? ONE. Sometimes looking at the millions of dogs that are hurting and homeless, can make our work as animal lovers seem overwhelming. However, if we take it one animal at a time, before you know it, you will have helped so many. Our fundraiser is one way that you can help!

If you are still interested in making a contribution, thereby becoming eligible to win any of the prizes listed below, please head here! You have until Monday, February 25th to make your donations, as we will be selecting the winners on Tuesday and making the announcements later that week!

Fundraiser: Prize #10 – Sunshine & Pitties

When we got married, I was so honored to have Foster Dad’s (FOUR!) sisters standing beside me on our big day. It was really important to me to find unique and distinctive gifts for each of his special ladies, that applied to their respective interests. I didn’t want to go the route of gifts with our wedding date engraved for years to come. For J’s youngest sister, E, it was so simple. We both share a passion for animals, and a lifelong dedication to the world of competitive horse showing. Where I had my once-in-a-lifetime horse named Frosty, hers is also a gorgeous, tall, gray gelding, named Norman. I knew that for her gift to be especially meaningful, I would need to incorporate her first love and best man! After taking a few (amateur!) shots of her gallant steed, I sent them along to an incredibly talented artist who specialized in custom animal portraits. Of course, E opened her gift with an appropriate mix of speechlessness and tears, and I was so proud to be able to provide her with such a treasured keepsake, truly indicative of my appreciation for her role in our lives, and in our special day.

I share this story to illustrate just how sacred such a gift can be. Our animals grace our lives in a pivotal, yet heartbreakingly brief, way. Having their presence preserved in a work of art to display in your home, is a gift that is truly invaluable.

The watermark will not appear on the print, it is just to protect the copyrighted images!

Alicia is an artist that specializes in pet portraiture and animal art in vivid color. She created her company, DawgArt, in 2003. She draws inspiration from a former professor, who would leave his students with the message to “Use your powers for good!” Alicia believes that art has power, and so when she puts her brush to her canvas, she has two goals: 1) to communicate the soul of one creature to another, and 2) to make people smile. All it takes is one look at her work to know that she brilliantly achieves both goals! However, she also absolutely uses her power for good, advocating for no-kill rescue and working with many animal rescues across the country.

Alicia has worked with almost every breed of dog imaginable.

While she works primarily in acrylic on canvas, Alicia also dabbles in photography, dry media, and writing. The inspiration for the color splash in her portraits comes from her youth in the desert Southwest. Alicia was born in Germany and raised in sunny Arizona, but now lives in Utah with her husband Tyler, their rescued cat Kiko, and their shelter dog Toby.

Alicia's work includes, dogs, cats, horses, and even wild animals!

Please visit Alicia’s store (here) to purchase any of these prints, but of course, she also embraces and encourages private commissions of custom portrait work. Can you imagine how impressive it would be to have a portrait of your own pet done in her bright and sunny style?! She captures the personality of her subjects so truly and eloquently, that you can’t help but smile.

Alicia has graciously offered a donation of 8×10 fine art prints. Please make a donation to our fundraiser for LCPO’s needy pit bulls, in increments of $10, to earn an entry! The bigger your donation, the more chances you have to win and one of our fabulous prizes!

Fundraiser: Prize #9 – Frost Yourself in Inspiration

Anyone that knows me in ‘real life’ knows that I have a thing for quotes. (I’m talking to you, Ticki Nhoma) I think that finding a few well-chosen words, uttered by a powerful individual from another time, can provide strength and courage when facing a new or challenging situation. It can bring comfort to know that someone else has been where you are, and gotten to the other side, mostly unscathed. I have always loved jewelry that can be symbolic of treasured quotes, because it serves as a physical reminder of the things that inspire us. My favorite quote in the world is “To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold.” So it’s no surprise that the Best Gift of all Time is the snowflake necklace my husband got me for my birthday last year, in remembrance of my beloved show horse, Frosty.

(Side note, my second favorite quote is “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Ghandi)

Lulu Bug Jewelry – Animal-Inspired Designs

While doing a search for wearable pit bull designs, I came across Lulu Bug Jewelry, where the masterpieces are all entirely hand-made and designed by an artist named Sue. While she says that her career choice was motivated by the fact that she comes from a long line of crafty women, her sweet Shar Pei, Lulu Bug, inspired the name. I knew instantly that I had to feature her work on the blog, as it fits perfectly into the jewelry requirements I listed above. Her work is truly meaningful, capturing memories and serving as a talisman of your inspirations and emotions. In her own words, Sue’s artistic process is defined below:

“I sculpt, inlay with tinted concrete and use my own illustrations to create original, meaningful pieces in .999 fine silver and .925 sterling silver. Fine silver is different than sterling in that it has no copper alloy, it’s pure silver. After the piece is formed, it’s fired in kiln at 1650 degrees for 2 hours. The binder burns off and the particles fuse, forming a pure silver object, also known as .999 fine silver. It’s quite magical! The majority of my pieces are made with fine silver PMC. ”

Sue's work features almost every breed of dog imaginable... you are sure to find a piece that reminds you of your own special pet!

Lulu Bug Jewelry has been in business since 2007, and Sue has been focusing on her personal creations full-time since 2009. All of her designs are eco-friendly, as they are made with reclaimed silver. The illustrations on her pieces are all created by Sue, and so you won’t find them anywhere else! She even makes the tools she uses to create these masterpieces.

You can purchase any of the pieces above, as well as many more, at Sue’s etsy shop, found here. You will be amazed at the quantity of work she offers, from ancient dinosaurs to whimsical recreations of wild animals, and of course many breeds of dogs, cats, and horses. She has a variety of necklaces made to feature motivational quotes, and other symbols that may be uniquely inspiring to your life story. Sue has graciously granted a discount to And Foster Makes Five, which has enabled us to provide one lucky winner with the Tiny Smiling Pit Necklace, shown below. To be eligible to win, simply head here to make a donation in increments of $10, which will earn you one entry for each $10 you pledge! As always, 100% of the funds will go directly to helping needy pits rescued through Luzerne County Pit Bull Owners in Pennsylvania.

Fundraiser: Prize #7 – A New Leash on Life

If you read our little blog on even a semi-regular basis, by now you should know that we are offering a super awesome fundraiser that benefits the Luzerne County Pit Bull Owners, our pittie rescue, and also gives you a chance to win really cool prizes.

LCPO is currently (like, as I type!) saving 3 lucky pups from the New York Animal Care & Control. Most of us familiar with pittie rescue know more than we would ever care to learn about what goes on inside those walls, but for those of you that don’t, let’s just say that it is about the worst place any pup could end up. Not only do they produce mass euthanasia lists every night, but rumors of neglect and abuse run rampant, not to mention the noisy chaos and cluttered disorganization that can lead to kennel stress and cage aggression.

Walking a dog out of the shelter, through the doors to fresh air and freedom, up into your car to nestle with cozy blankets, and eventually into your house to decompress in comfort and quiet, might just be one of the greatest things you ever do…. Not only for the dog, but also for yourself. LCPO is saving not just one, but THREE lucky dogs. While there are many loving, adoptable dogs behind those doors, the three that are coming to safety are about to have a whole new outlook on life. How cool is that?!

We all sit online each night, seeing the pathetic faces of dogs who face death while living a life behind bars. We wish we could do something about it… LCPO is one of the groups that actually DOES. Every. Single. Day. Let me be their voice, and ask for a little bit of help. Pulling three dogs at once is no easy feat, and they can use every penny we can bring them! Often when you make a donation to a non-profit, you get nothing in return, aside from the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a difference. This time, I’m offering you a way to simultaneously give back, and also take a little. 😉

Each of the incoming LCPO dogs will be promptly outfitted with some brand-spankin’ new duds from…

2 Hounds Design: Collar & Custom Harness/Leash Combo

The brain, beauty, and brawn behind 2 Hounds Design is Alisha Navarro, a self-proclaimed collar addict artist. 2 Hounds Design began in 2003 as a creative outlet to produce the perfect collar for her two Greyhounds, who are retired racers. She has now developed a team of people who all work long and hard to perfect the art of collar-making, here in the United States. They use only premium hardware and the finest quality fabrics. Alisha employs a hands-on approach, selecting each fabric and ribbon herself; from hand-loomed Laotian and Scalamandre silk, to French Jacquard Ribbon and Asian Silk Brocades, they produce a stunning and extensive selection of dog collars!

DownloadedFile

What began as a way to create a special, custom-design for her own two pups hounds, turned into a dog-lover’s true life passion. Alisha considers herself lucky to be living her dream, and doing what she loves, all while providing customers with a great experience and one more way to (stylishly!) spoil their best friends. While this is how she makes her living, Alisha and 2 Hounds Design have helped to raise more than $350,000 for adoption groups all over the world. She does so much for the canine community, and makes an effort to give back in any way she can. One way that they do this is by providing donation matching. If you purchase one collar as a donation to your non-profit dog rescue group, 2 Hounds Design will match your donation for up to 3 collars!

2 Hound Designs are best known for their stunning martingale collars and matching leashes, but did you know that they also produce custom harnesses? Wiggles, Wags, and Whiskers is their sister company, which creates the harnesses you have seen on Georgia and her other LCPO friends. One of the common purchases is the Freedom Training Package, which consists of the harness and double-connection training leash. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the patented Freedom No-Pull Harness does exactly what it is designed to do, by featuring a loop on the back of the harness, which tightens gently around your dog’s chest. This discourages pulling and makes your daily walks a much more enjoyable experience!

Gia models both her 2HD cupcake collar and custom harness!

To be eligible to win both a gorgeous collar and custom harness from 2 Hounds Design, you simply must make a contribution toward our fundraising efforts for LCPO, here. Minimum amount for eligibility is $10, though each increment of $10 will earn you an additional entry. Every little bit truly does help!

Fundraiser: Prize #6 – Staying Cozy

I don’t know about you guys, but it is still pretty chilly here in Pennsylvania, and I am not anticipating an end to that any time soon. I am lucky that we live on a somewhat large, private piece of property, because it makes it easy (and safe!) to scoot the dogs out the back door in the early mornings or late evenings. I can stay warm and cozy inside, watching them through the glass door, while they venture through the snow and slush to investigate strange smells and do their other ‘important’ business. Gaige and Tonka both have some thickness to their coats, so I haven’t had to worry too much about them throughout the winter. However, poor widdle Gia is a big baby when it comes to cold weather. She will stand at the back door, refusing to go any further, until I wrap her cheap-o Petsmart coat around her back, and push her out the door. I have been searching for a functional yet fashionable solution to this problem, with little success. I wasn’t sure I could justify paying almost as much for a tiny little dog coat, as I have for my own! All of my worries were without cause once I found…

Tiennot Knits: Custom Sweaters

Our friend Emily writes one of our favorite blogs over at Our Waldo Bungie. As much as she loves big, block-headed dogs like our Georgia and her own Turk, Emily is also a talented DIY / crafter / designer lady, and so it would be only natural to imagine her combining the two passions. She teamed up with her mother, who began knitting sweaters for her own grand-pups (Turk, Rufus, and an assortment of fosters) and the trend caught on. Before long, all of her blogging friends needed some of their own, and thus, Tiennot Sweaters was born! Their business has since grown into a variety of hand-knitted accessories for your pup, including knitted hoods and bow ties.

While these sweaters were originally designed with the short-coated pittie in mind, they can be adapted to fit almost any dog! This is because they are created uniquely upon each order, with requests for your dog’s specific measurements. They are also conscious of our ‘elderbulls,’ and offer designs with front and side buttons for easy access. Not only are these products designed with quality in mind, but they offer incredibly competitive pricing.

C Love & a Six-Foot Leash

C Love & a Six-Foot Leash

I’ve been a big fan of Emily’s for a long time. She has always been so kind and encouraging of myself, and many other blogging new-comers. Of course, I shouldn’t have been surprised when she graciously offered to contribute to our fundraiser for LCPO. Nevertheless, I so appreciate her generosity in granting one custom Tiennot Knits fitted sweater to a lucky winner of the giveaway. To provide a little warmth for your pup and add a little warmth to you heart, enter the giveaway by donating at least $10 per entry, here. Remember, all donations will benefit our rescue! Stay-tuned for a few more prizes to be announced over the coming week!

Fundraiser: Prize #5 – All That Glitters

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, many of us females may let our minds wander to things that sparkle and shine. (Yes, this is true, even if our Valentine reminds us that we were just appropriately granted a shiny, red washer & dryer… for the record, appliances shouldn’t ever count, as far as I’m concerned!) As you are imagining yourself frosted in diamonds and jewels, who are you picturing as your Valentine? If your dog jumps to mind as the most worthy candidate, you  need to go on a date must have a pup like my Tonka! Regardless, I’m sure you can agree that your loving, loyal pet deserves at least a little bit of recognition this Valentine’s day. Why shouldn’t he or she be adorned in some bling of their own?!

Fundraiser: Prize #4 – Getting Playful!

I know that your dogs would all be thrilled if their owners won them any of the three prizes already posted this week (here, here, and yesterday). However, I wanted to make sure that I offered some items that would really excite the canine crowd!

Squishy Face Studio:

While searching for toys specifically directed at bully breeds, I came across Squishy Face Studio. I don’t know about you, but that name instantly conjured up images of all of my favorite lova-bull, snuggle-a-bull, cuddle-a-bull pitties! And I was ‘leashed’. (Get it?) After speaking with Jessica (the girlier half of owners Justin & Jessica Lohman) I was in love… not only with their products, but with her! I will let you read her personal description below, as I don’t think I can say it any better…

about

“Squishy Face Studio is a Florida-based, family-owned business started by Justin and Jessica Lohmann in 2009. Our mission is to create the most innovative and durable toys available for strong and active dogs. Our toys are designed to provide both physical and mental exercise, with the goal of keeping your dogs happy and healthy. Our products are proudly made in the U.S.A.

We are passionate dog advocates, specifically defending “bully” breeds and opposing Breed Specific Legislation. We feel that education is the key to changing the circumstances of these misunderstood animals. We also advocate adoption from animal rescues, shelters and the Humane Society. We donate frequently to organizations that promote these ideals and work to reach the awesome goal of No More Homeless Pets both in our local community and throughout the nation.

{You thought that was good? Here is where is gets really great.}

We are constantly inspired by our own small pack; Petey, Max, Lily and Mr. Kitty (who thinks he is a dog). All three of our actual dogs have been labeled “pit bulls” or pit bull mixes at one point or another. The truth, as it is with many if not most rescued and adopted dogs, is that they are MIOs (Mutts of Indistinguishable Origin). What DNA tests and conformation standards can’t tell you is that they are a perpetual source of happiness, a constant reminder of what is right with the world. They love us and we love them, and nothing in life gets any better than that.”

Sigh. Have you fallen tail over ears yet? If not, just wait until you see their products.

What I love about their toys, is that they offer a variety of ways to exercise your pet; both mentally and physically! Use their Flirt Pole as a fun, interactive way to play with your dog, building your bond and increasing their confidence. On lazy days when your pup isn’t quite ready to be a couch potato, send them out into your backyard to play with the Super Tug, solo. Either way, you can be sure that your dog is getting a great workout, while having fun, and supporting a company that support pitties!
